Ecotoxicological Characterization of Type C Killer Whales From Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica): Molecular Biomarkers, Legacy, and Emerging Persistent Organic Contaminants

چکیده

Among killer whale forms, type C is a fish-eating form and the most common in Ross Sea. In austral summer 2015, study was conducted to evaluate toxicological hazard these marine mammals face Antarctic ecosystem. Seven biopsy samples were collected from adult individuals (five males two females) surroundings of Italian Research Station Mario Zucchelli, Terra Nova Bay, by remote dart sampling pack ice. The accumulation levels persistent organic pollutants (POPs) such as legacy (DDTs, PCBs, HCB) emerging (PBDEs DP) measured. Moreover, protein expression cytochrome P450 (CYP1A1 2B) mRNA level variations peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors ? ? ( PPAR - ?) estrogen receptor ER ?), aryl hydrocarbon AhR ), Cyp1a evaluated. Twenty PCB congeners, six DDTs, HCB, three HCHs, fourteen brominated BDEs DP-syn anti-isomers analyzed on freeze-dried blubber GC-MS. evaluated Western Blot quantified quantitative real-time PCR. average abundance pattern for contaminants DDTs > PCBs HCB HCHs ? PBDEs >> DP. Contaminant resulted be lower when compared existing data whales McMurdo Sound (Ross Sea) those reported worldwide. five target genes successfully quantified, but no statistical correlation found with POP levels, suggesting that either low POPs may not significantly affect biological responses investigated, or other stressors could contribute alterations molecular biomarkers. Although results showed risk related contamination more impacted areas, this provides baseline conservation species an area high ecological value, recently declared largest Marine Protected Area Antarctica, where should remain at minimum despite increasing multiple stresses region.

Summer Epiphytic Diatoms from Terra Nova Bay and Cape Evans (Ross Sea, Antarctica)--A Synthesis and Final Conclusions.

Despite recent advances in polar marine biology and related fields, many aspects of the ecological interactions that are crucial for the functioning of Antarctic shallow water habitats remain poorly understood. Although epiphytic diatoms play an essential role in the Antarctic marine food web, basic information regarding their ecology, biodiversity and biogeography is largely unavailable. Here,...

Highly Heterogeneous Soil Bacterial Communities around Terra Nova Bay of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica

Given the diminished role of biotic interactions in soils of continental Antarctica, abiotic factors are believed to play a dominant role in structuring of microbial communities. However, many ice-free regions remain unexplored, and it is unclear which environmental gradients are primarily responsible for the variations among bacterial communities. In this study, we investigated the soil bacter...

Application of a Terrestrial LIDAR System for Elevation Mapping in Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica

A terrestrial Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) system has high productivity and accuracy for topographic mapping, but the harsh conditions of Antarctica make LIDAR operation difficult. Low temperatures cause malfunctioning of the LIDAR system, and unpredictable strong winds can deteriorate data quality by irregularly shaking co-registration targets. For stable and efficient LIDAR operation i...

Formaldehyde determination in seawater. Preliminary application to coastal samples at Terra Nova Bay (Antarctica).

A sensitive spectrofluorimetric-FIA (flow injection analysis) method for formaldehyde (HCHO) determination was improved with the aim of analysing seawater samples. The fluorescence emission versus HCHO concentration shows a linear pattern from sub microg L(-1) to about 1000 microg L(-1). The reproducibility at 15 ppb level is about 2%. Interferences from other aldehydes were checked; only glyox...

Persistent organic pollutants in soils and sediments from James Ross Island, Antarctica.

Soil and sediment samples from James Ross Island were analyzed for their PCB, OCP and PAH contents. Soil concentrations ranged between 0.51 and 1.82 ng g(-1) for seven indicator PCB congeners, between 0.49 and 1.34 ng g(-1) for HCH congeners, between 0.51 and 3.68 ng g(-1) for the sum of p,p'-DDT, DDE, and DDD, and between 34.9 and 171 ng g(-1) for the sum of 16 EPA PAHs. Sediment levels from 0...
